What Is Answer Engine Optimization and Does Your Store Need It?

What Do We Change to Make a Page Quotable?

We restructure the page around questions, put a direct answer immediately under each one, and remove the throat clearing that machines cannot parse.

None of this makes a page worse for a human reader. Every one of these changes also makes a page easier to skim, which is how most people read anything on a phone.

  • Headings become questions, phrased the way buyers phrase them rather than as category labels.
  • A direct answer of two to four sentences sits immediately under each heading, before any explanation.
  • Definitions are stated plainly and completely in one place, so they can be lifted without the surrounding sentences.
  • Lists and tables replace paragraphs wherever the content is genuinely a list or a comparison, because those formats extract cleanly.
  • Specific numbers, prices and timeframes replace vague words like affordable, fast and many.
  • Frequently asked questions are marked up so each pair can be understood as a question and its answer.

Illustrative: the same page restructured for quotability.

Which Pages Should Be Optimised for Answers First?

The pages that answer a decision question. Buying guides, comparisons, category explanations and the questions on your product pages. Not your home page and not your about page.

Answers are given to questions, so pages that do not answer a question have nothing to offer. A home page describing a brand is not an answer to anything, which is why trying to optimise it for this produces nothing.

Start with the questions where being the quoted source would actually lead to a sale. How do I choose. What is the difference between these. What should I check before buying. What does this cost. Those are the moments where naming a brand carries weight.

Then work outward to definition questions in your category. Those bring fewer immediate buyers but they establish your store as a source, which is what makes the commercial answers more likely to include you later.

How Do You Measure Whether It Is Working?

By running the same set of buying questions through the same tools every month and recording whether your brand appears, in what position, and how it is described.

There is no dashboard that reports this reliably yet, which is why most agencies do not measure it at all and instead show you traffic and hope you connect the two.

We do it manually and consistently. A fixed list of questions agreed with you at the start, run monthly across the main tools, with the answers recorded and dated. Over six months that produces a real picture of whether your visibility is rising, and it is comparable because the questions never change.

We also track the boxed answers in ordinary search results, which can be measured more conventionally, and the searches where your pages appear but are not being quoted, which is usually the fastest place to gain.
