Search engine optimization aims to win a position in a list of links. Answer engine optimization aims to be the source a written answer is built from. They use most of the same work and they are judged by different results.
The confusion comes from the fact that the same page can do both, and often the same changes improve both. That leads some people to say they are identical, and others to sell them as entirely separate products. Neither is right.
The honest position is that AEO is a way of doing SEO with a different target in mind, and that the overlap is roughly seventy per cent.
Where Do the Two Actually Differ?
In five places: what they are aiming at, what a win looks like, what is measured, how quickly it moves, and what happens to the traffic.
The last row is where most of the argument about AEO happens. A mention without a click is harder to measure and easy to dismiss, but a buyer who was told your brand name by a tool they trust is a buyer who now searches for you directly.
| Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Aiming at | A position in a list of results | Being the source of a written or spoken answer |
| A win looks like | Ranking on the first page for a phrase | Your page being the one quoted, or your brand being named |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, sessions, revenue from organic traffic | Whether you appear in answers, where, and how you are described |
| Speed | Weeks to months, and reasonably predictable | Weeks for page level answers, months for brand level recognition |
| Traffic effect | Wins a click | May win a click, may win only a mention, and a mention still has value |
Where Do They Overlap?
In almost all the underlying work. Being crawlable, being relevant, being clear and being trusted are requirements for both, and that is most of what either discipline consists of.
A page that cannot be reached by a crawler cannot rank and cannot be quoted. A page that does not answer the question will not rank and will not be quoted. A brand nobody links to or mentions struggles in both.
So the foundations are shared, and any agency selling AEO as a completely separate service with a separate fee is charging twice for the same groundwork.
The genuine differences are in the writing and structure of a page, and in the measurement. Both are real, and neither justifies a second retainer.
How Should a Store Split the Budget Between Them?
Do not split it. Fund one programme that includes both, and adjust the emphasis based on what your category looks like when you search it.
The practical test takes ten minutes. Search the top twenty questions in your category and look at what appears. If most results show a written answer above the links, and if chat tools give confident recommendations naming specific brands, your category has already moved and the answer side deserves more emphasis.
If your category still shows plain lists of links, with little AI summarising, then ordinary search work will carry most of the value for now and the answer work is preparation rather than an urgent need.
Categories vary enormously in this. Consumer products, health, technology and anything people research before buying have moved fastest. Specialist industrial and business to business categories have moved much more slowly.
What Happens to Your Traffic When Answers Take Over a Category?
Total clicks fall, the clicks that remain convert better, and brand searches rise if you are being named. Reading only the first of those three leads people to the wrong conclusion.
The pattern is now well documented across many categories. When a written answer appears above the results, fewer people click through, because many of them got what they needed. That is a real loss and there is no point pretending otherwise.
What is less obvious is what happens to the clicks that remain. They come from people whose question was not fully answered, which usually means they are further along and more serious. Traffic falls and conversion rate rises, sometimes enough to leave revenue flat or higher.
The third effect is the one worth building for. If your brand is named in those answers, some readers will search for your name directly later. That shows up as branded search growth, not as organic traffic from the original question, which means the value is real and lands in a different place from where it was created.
So the correct measurement is revenue plus branded search volume, not sessions. A store judging this work by session counts alone will conclude it is failing while it is working.
Which One Should You Learn First?
Search engine optimization, because it is the foundation and because the answer work is a layer on top of it that does not function alone.
Someone who understands how pages are found, indexed, structured and linked can add the answer layer in a few weeks. Someone who has only learned the answer layer will produce well structured pages that nothing can reach.
This is also true for hiring. An agency that has done search work for years and has adapted to answers is a safer choice than one that started last year and only knows the new part.
The reverse warning applies too. An agency that has not adapted at all, and still measures success purely in rankings, is optimising for a picture of search that is steadily becoming less complete.
