Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of writing and structuring content so that a machine can lift a direct answer out of it. The aim is not to rank in a list of links. The aim is to be the source the answer is built from.
You have already seen the result of it. You search for something, and above the normal results there is a short written answer. You ask a chat tool a question, and it replies in sentences, sometimes naming brands or sites. In both cases something had to be read to produce that answer, and AEO is the work of making sure your content is what gets read.
The term is new. The underlying idea is not. Writing clearly, answering the question you promised to answer, and putting the answer near the top have always worked. What has changed is that the reward for doing it is now much larger, and the penalty for not doing it is that you disappear entirely rather than sitting at position eight.
What Counts as an Answer Engine?
Anything that gives you a written or spoken answer instead of a list of places to look. That includes search engines when they answer directly, AI chat tools, and voice assistants.
The fourth row is the one that matters most for a store and gets the least attention. It runs on your product data rather than your writing, which means the work to get into it is different from everything else on this list.
| Type | Examples | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Search engines answering directly | The boxed answer at the top of results, and AI Overviews | A short answer lifted or summarised from one or more pages, sometimes with links |
| AI chat tools | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Gemini | A conversational answer, often naming brands, products or sources |
| Voice assistants | Phone and speaker assistants | A single spoken answer with no visible list at all |
| Shopping answers | Product suggestions inside chat tools and search | Actual products with prices, built from product data rather than page copy |
Why Does This Matter More for Stores Than for Other Businesses?
Because product research is one of the most common things people ask these tools, and because a store that is not named in a recommendation is not in the running for the sale.
When someone asks what to buy, the answer they get names a small number of options. Two or three, sometimes five. That is a much shorter list than a page of ten results, and there is no second page.
For a service business this matters less, because a person choosing a lawyer or a plumber usually wants to compare several and will look further. For a product, particularly a low or medium priced one, the named options are often the whole consideration set.
There is also a compounding effect. Being named makes a brand more likely to be mentioned elsewhere, which makes it more likely to be named again. Being absent has the opposite effect, quietly, for as long as it lasts.
What Do You Actually Change on a Page?
Six things, and none of them make the page worse for a human reader.
If you do only one of these, do the second. A direct answer placed immediately under a question heading is the single change that most often turns a page into a quoted source.
THE PRACTICAL CHANGES
How Do You Check Whether It Is Working?
Write down ten real questions from your category, ask them of the main tools, and record the answers with the date. Repeat monthly with the same questions.
There is no reliable dashboard for this yet. Anyone selling you one is selling an estimate. The honest method is manual and it is not difficult, it is just repetitive.
Keep the questions fixed. The value comes from comparing the same questions over time, so changing them because you thought of better ones destroys the comparison. Write ten good ones, then leave them alone for a year.
Record three things each time. Whether your brand appears. Where in the answer it appears, since first named carries more weight than last. And how you are described, since a wrong description is a separate problem from being absent.
Is This Replacing Search Engine Optimization?
No. It is a layer on top of it. Almost everything that makes a page eligible to be quoted also makes it rank, and a page that cannot be found cannot be quoted either.
The framing of AEO replacing SEO is mostly marketing, usually from people selling one and not the other. In practice the work overlaps heavily. A page has to be reachable, readable and relevant before any of this applies, and that is ordinary search work.
What is genuinely new is a shift in what winning looks like. Ranking first without being quoted is now a partial win rather than a complete one, and being quoted without ranking first is possible in a way it was not before.
The sensible response is not to move budget from one to the other. It is to change how everything is written from now on, and to retrofit your most valuable pages once.
